Committee meeting and Seminars

Liverpool is together with Stavanger European Capital of Culture 2008 !

As it is now the tradition in les rencontres, we have met in Liverpool from 28th February to 2nd March for the Committee meeting and then we will meet in Stavanger from 16th to 19th October for the AGM (Annual General Meeting).

With the participation of almost 50 representatives, two thematic meetings took place in Liverpool : the first on Friday 29th February in the afternoon we analysed the question of free access to Museums and certain Monuments in European cities ; the second on Saturday 1st March in the morning enabled us to further the debates on the drafting of a White Paper on the cultural policies of local and regional authorities in Europe.

les rencontres, held its Committee meeting on Friday 29th February in the morning, in order to approve the accounts and the activities of the year 2007, to discuss the forthcoming calendar and budget of the year 2008 and to examine the organisation and running of the network.

In the afternoon of Friday 29th February a seminar was organised in order to initiate debates and discussions on the question of free access to Museums and certain monuments in the cities of Europe. Indeed examining such a question in the light of the successful experiences in England and in certain cities (Paris for example) seems appropriate. We asked ourselves in this framework: What are the aims of such a measure? Does this measure contribute to an increase in visitors, does it encourage regular visits ? Have local or regional authorities applied these measures and have they been successful elsewhere in Europe?

On Saturday 1st March in the morning, a progress report was given on the drafting of the White Paper on the cultural policies of local and regional authorities in Europe. We confirm that both sessions lead to interesting discussions between members of the Committee, representatives of EU institutions, elected leaders and professionals.
